Sam Kerr receives City of Perth’s highest award

Soccer superstar Sam Kerr will become the first WA woman to receive the keys to the City of Perth at a public celebration next month.

At a special council meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the Perth City Council voted to award the Keys to the City to the WA-born international sports star.

Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas said Kerr inspired all young athletes and that this honor was not regularly awarded.

“Sam is a role model athlete and an inspiration to young and old, but especially to young girls, and she is arguably Australia’s most decorated and popular athlete,” he said.

“I am delighted that by awarding this award, she becomes the first Western Australian-born female recipient of the Keys to the City of Perth.

“I spoke to her parents, and they told me she would be delighted and honored to receive this award.”

Kerr will be the first Keys to the City recipient since Kerry Stokes was recognized eight years ago.

The 28-year-old will officially hand over the keys at a public event on Friday, July 8, at Forrest Place.

Zempilas said it would be a great opportunity for the public to see Kerr accept the award and “show her the appreciation she deserves”.

On Friday evening, the City’s town hall will be lit with green and gold lights in honor of Kerr and Australia’s men’s soccer team, the Socceroos, who qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Thursday.

Kerr has received multiple accolades since entering the football scene in 2009 as a 15-year-old.

Last month she received the Women’s Footballer of the Year for her club Chelsea for the best player in the FA Women’s Super League in England.

She is Australia’s all-time scorer, winning the treble with Chelsea for the past two seasons and the prestigious Golden Boot for most goals scored.

This year she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her achievements in football following her 2018 Young Australian of the Year award.

Kerr is currently in Perth, spending time with her family while enjoying an off-season break.

Past recipients of the City of Perth Key to the City include Nobel Prize-winning scientists Professor Barry Marshall and Dr. Robin Warren and the West Coast Eagles, who in 1992 became the first team outside of Victoria to win the AFL premiership.
