Everyone can finally see Moulin Rouge – and you don’t have to travel to Paris.
The multi-award-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical heads to Crown Theater Perth in February.
The musical, which received critical acclaim in Melbourne last November, brings Baz Luhrmann’s beloved 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor to life in a spectacular bohemian feast.

“The show is like the movie, but 1,000 were made,” said Alinta Chidzey, who stars as Sparkling Diamond Satine alongside Des Flanagan as writer Christian and Simon Burke as club impresario Harold Zidler.
“It’s really wild, and I think the most important aspect is its life; you feel this huge vibration of the music, and the set makes you feel like you are right in the club.
“It’s a very immersive experience on a large scale. There are over 200 costumes and 75 pop songs, including some of the originals from the movie, so it’s a real hodgepodge of some of the old classics like Roxanne, Come What May and Your Song, and then there are pop singers like Beyonce, Adele, and Sia.
“I get to sing Katy Perry’s Fireworks, which I never thought I’d be a huge fan of, but in the context of the show, it really works.”

Chidzey first saw Luhrmann’s film in high school and recalls thinking it had all the necessary components for a stage show. However, she never imagined she would be the one to make Satine’s spectacular swing entrance so memorably performed by Kidman in the film.
“Luckily, I’m not afraid of heights, and it’s a fantastic production number to be in,” she said. “I can’t beat it unless I was Pink or something.”
Her role required 16 costume changes, some in a run time of just 10 seconds. Still, she said it was all worth it gave Catherine Zuber’s incredible costume designs, from the can-can skirts to her diamond outfit, which contributed to the sensory overload. Of production.

Chidzey made her Perth debut about 20 years ago in the musical Mamma Mia! and has since returned in Dusty: The Original Pop Diva, The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, West Side Story, and most recently, Hugh Jackman’s Broadway to Oz.
“Moulin Rouge! The Musical is nothing like you’ve ever seen before,” she said.
“You don’t know where to look, so you’ll have to see it a few times.”
